Energy recovery at waste incineration

Objective

Extended energy recovery by condensation of the hot flue gases at waste incineration offers a very interesting economical incentive if the generated heat can be sold. Moreover the flue gas treatment function is improved. The environmental gains are also significant in respect of reduced greenhouse gases. Reliable technologies are today available for waste incineration enabling efficient recovery of waste heat . In Scandinavia and particularly in Sweden most waste incineration plants are equipped with flue gas condensers, often in combination with heat pumps that will enhance the energy recovery even more! As a supplier of advanced thermal waste treatment systems, Götaverken Miljö has delivered such equipment to a significant number of waste incineration lines in Sweden and Denmark, countries of which are in the forefront when it comes to this kind of environmental installations. You can read about our scope of delivery under 'Products' below.

District or local cooling of office buildings, hospitals and shopping centers may, by means of absorption chillers using district heating, hot water or steam, further improve the economy in an incinerator investment.

Maximized energy recovery is a general trend, partly by the reasons explained above, but also due to discussions and requirements in the EC legislation including the BAT Reference Document (BREF) on waste incineration.

Products

Flue gas condensers are offered separately, normally in the form of a tower packing type of scrubber condenser or they can be supplied as a dedicated stage in multifunctional scrubber systems with our patented integrated circulation tanks. Typically, the recovered amount of energy is in the range from 1 MWh/h up to 15 MWh/h of heat per condenser unit.

Absorption heat pumps range in recovered energy capacity normally between some 1 MWh/h up to 10 MWh/h.

The chillers can be supplied in sizes ranging from a few hundred kW capacity up to 3-5 MW cooling per unit depending on the specific circumstances.

Dimensioning

Condensers are purpose-designed for the actual operational situations.
